UN-ADULT-ERATED BLACK JOY

"Unadulterated Black Joy" was a poignant celebration of Black joy, featuring the collective works of Alison Croney Moses, Ekua Holmes, L’Merchie Frazier Tanya Nixon-Silberg, and Zahirah Nur Truth. This group exhibition illuminated the resilience and vibrancy of Black mothers and artists, affirming the timeless presence of Black joy.

The exhibition stood as a bold act of resistance and self-preservation, inviting all to witness and embrace the joy inherent in Black culture. Through art, play, and a focus on self-care, the artists centered the importance of nurturing and celebrating Black joy.

Over the course of a month, visitors were immersed in the culmination of a multi-year community-based art project involving Black mothers from 2020 to 2022. This inclusive space was created for healing, camaraderie, and support, fostering an environment where grief and joy coexisted harmoniously.

The artworks on display were inspired by the artists' own joyful memories of girlhood, their experiences as mothers, and the richness of Black adulthood. Accompanied by video documentation of community gatherings, the exhibition offered a glimpse into the profound impact of collective joy and support within the Black community.

"The audience is encouraged to leave their judgments, heaviness, tiredness, and more, to open space within themselves for joy."- Tanya Nixon-Silberg
